Work-Life Balance

Most people put the quest for a work-life balance at the top of their wish list. This is especially true for men and women with family demands. Managing your time and focus to meet all the different needs of your work and home life takes quite some thinking.

However, your work-life balance can be easier to achieve than you think. The first thing to be clear about is that this does not mean giving equal time or status to your work and your home life. Trying to give an equal number of hours to work and personal activities is usually unrealistic and unrewarding. You need to recognise that work and personal life will demand different things from you at different times. The trick is to be able to give each part of your life what it requires at the right time. If work is particularly hectic and stressful, you need to be able to concentrate on delivering what is expected of you. If people at home need your help and support, you need to be able to give them your undivided attention and focus when they need it.

The problems come when the peak demands of home and work overlap and create a clash. The problems escalate when you have got into the habit of always giving work priority and never making time for the personal side of your life.

When it comes to setting work-life priorities, you need to recognise that your priorities are likely to change day by day, month by month and certainly by the different stages of your career over time. And what is right for you may not be the same for others – even if, on the surface, they seem to be in a very similar situation to you. The key to getting the balance right for you is to be able to recognise your changing needs and to adjust your focus without too much difficulty.
