British star, Carey Mulligan, is having a great time. In just a few months, the young actress has shot from obscurity to Hollywood hot property. Film critics, fashion lovers and fans proclaim Mulligan to be one of the most exciting new talents around.  With her short, cropped hair, her gamine good looks and her unmistakable style, Mulligan certainly stands out from the crowd. But do not be deceived by her impish and mischievous appearance. Industry insiders say Mulligan is extremely ambitious and determined to succeed. It looks like she is set to become one of the most famous faces of her generation.

Mulligan was born on 28 May 1985 in Westminster in London. She lived with her parents in England until she was three years old. Mulligan then moved to Germany when her father took a job managing hotels. For the next few years, she lived with her family in a number of expensive hotels on the Continent before returning to England to attend boarding school.

Mulligan's family was not theatrical. Her father is in the hotel industry, while her mother was a university lecturer. In fact, it was not until Mulligan watched her older brother, Owain, act in a school production of  The King and I that the acting bug struck. From that point on, Mulligan set her heart on acting. "When I was growing up, the dream was having light bulbs around your mirror," she says.

Mulligan's family was initially opposed to her becoming an actress. Instead, her parents wanted her to go to university. It was a difficult decision for her. As she explained, "We had no family friends who were actors. It was very alien. They wanted me to go to university. They were scared". Despite her family's concerns, Mulligan secretly applied to three drama schools. All three schools rejected her. Undeterred, Mulligan contacted Oscar-winning British screenwriter and novelist Julian Fellowes. Fellowes agreed to help her.  With his encouragement, Mulligan contacted a casting agent and auditioned for a part as Kitty Bennet in the film Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightly.
