Leonardo DiCaprio is a rare being. Having achieved fame and fortune at a young age, he has successfully managed the almost impossible transition - from child star to teen idol to respected and versatile actor. When DiCaprio was just 22 years old, he starred alongside Kate Winslet in the blockbuster film Titanic. Directed by James Cameron, Titanic catapulted the young star and his co-stars into the global limelight. Titanic became the highest grossing film up to that time and, together with the 1950s classic film Ben Hur, received the highest number of Academy Awards.
Although DiCaprio enjoyed the intense media attention that Titanic brought, the young star knew that he had achieved a level of fame hard to sustain in the future. Cynics doubted if he could stay on top of his game. Fortunately, he has shown his critics that he has enduring talent. Today, he remains one of his generation’s most successful actors and is a highly respected Hollywood film producer to boot.
DiCaprio was born on 11 November 1974 in Echo Park, which was then a poor neighbourhood of Los Angeles known as “The Ghetto of Hollywood”. He was named after the famous Renaissance painter Leonardo Da Vinci. His mother, perhaps suspecting that her child was destined for fame and fortune, felt a kick from her unborn son while she was studying a Leonardo Da Vinci painting at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
