Taylor Swift

It is no exaggeration to say that Taylor Swift is a titan in the country music world. As a celebrated songwriter, actress and singer still in her early twenties, Swift has achieved a great deal in a very short time. And her appeal is not just amongst American country music lovers. By cleverly using online social networks such as MySpace, Swift has connected to millions of young fans worldwide. As one of the first country superstars of the digital age, she has sold more than 20 million downloads. Today, she is acknowledged as a true breakthrough artiste. Even her fiercest critics admit that she has revolutionised not just the world of country music, but also the world of hip hop and rock.

Taylor Alison Swift was born on 13 December 1989 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. She is the first child and only daughter of Andrea and Scott Swift. The young Swift's father worked as a stockbroker, while her mother stayed at home to look after her and her younger brother, Austin.

Swift's parents understood that their daughter was special when she was just a little girl. When she was in fourth grade, she won a national poetry contest with an epic poem called, "A Monster in My Closet". At 10 years old, Swift began writing her own songs. She also entered all the festivals, singing and karaoke contests that came anywhere near her hometown in Wyomissing. As an extremely determined and focused 12-year-old, Swift spent a summer writing a 350-page novel that remains unpublished. When she was just 14, she became the youngest person ever to be signed as a professional staff songwriter at Sony/ATV Publishing.

To encourage Swift still further, her parents made several regular trips to Nashville, Tennessee to give their daughter an opportunity to mix with other country songwriters and singers. Later, the family moved to Hendersonville, on the outskirts of Nashville, so that she could build up her reputation. After performing at Nashville's songwriter's venue The Bluebird Cafe, a talent scout named Scott Borchetta spotted Swift and signed her up for his newly-formed record label Big Machine Records.
