 | | For millions of teenage girls across the world, Zac Efron is one of the coolest young Hollywood actors around. Best known for his role in Disney's High School Musical, Rolling Stone magazine dubbed him the "ultimate poster boy for tweeny-boppers". Efron started acting when he was just eleven years old. Armed with a strong work ethic, Efron worked throughout his teenage years. But Efron freely admits that he never expected to be so famous so soon. Now in his twenties, all eyes are on him as he attempts to progress into more adult roles.

Efron was born in San Luis Obispo in California, USA on 18 October 1987. He and his family moved to Arroyo Grande, California when he was small. Efron enjoyed what he described as a "pretty normal childhood". His father, an engineer at a local power plant, encouraged him to develop his acting and singing skills from an early age. Spurred on by his father, Efron took singing lessons and played a number of different roles in theatre productions at his high school. Efron worked hard. He worked in a theatre called The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville. He performed in Peter Pan, Auntie Marne, the Little Shop of Horrors and Music Man. From this start, Efron won a number of small roles in such television series as ER, Firefly and The Guardian. He also landed the role of the girl-crazy Cameron Bale in the television series Summerland. Efron's big break came in 2006, with the release of the phenomenally popular High School Musical. Playing Troy Bolton, a popular student and captain of the basketball team, Efron became an overnight success. The film's triple platinum soundtrack and record-breaking DVD sales meant that Efron and his fellow actors hit the Hollywood big time. At one point, a total of five singles from High School Musical were in the American charts at the same time! But not all the media attention was flattering. Critics questioned Efron's singing skills in particular and revealed that all his songs included the voice of Drew Seeley, a fellow actor in the film. The criticism stung Efron. Ever since, Efron has been clear that he sees himself as an actor first and a singer second.
